If you’re using Android Auto for anything more than listening to music and running navigation apps, you probably noticed that the experience with Google Assistant isn’t always flawless.
And earlier this year, users started complaining of an issue that caused the Assistant to actually read the incoming text messages in a different language than the one configured on the device.

Most often, the whole thing happened in countries where Android Auto isn’t officially supported, and the Assistant ended up reading the incoming languages not in the local language, but in English.

Fast forward to today and here’s Google finally providing a workaround, explaining that this is something that’s related to how the Assistant works in the first place.

More specifically, it’s because the Assistant in Android Auto doesn’t work in all countries, and this is why it’s suddenly switching to English for no clear reason. On the other hand, if the bug happens on a device in a country where Android Auto and the Assistant are both supported, just configure the apps once again with the language that you want and everything should be fine.

Assistant in Android Auto currently supports a limited number of countries which are listed on the Android Auto official website. We appreciate your patience as we work to support more countries in the future,” a member of the Android Auto team at Google explained.

Important: If your Google Assistant reads text messages in the wrong language, remove English as a secondary language. Then change your Google Assistant’s voice language to match your Google Assistant’s language.

Needless to say, running the latest version of the Google app, which powers the Assistant, and Android Auto also helps ensure a smoother performance, so make sure you install the latest releases when they go live. A new Android Auto update with additional fixes is also expected in the coming days.
