Google has recently released a new Google Maps update for iOS, which means the new app can be used both on the iPhone and on CarPlay when the smartphone is connected to the car.
There are two things that are worth mentioning about this new version of Google Maps published in the App Store.

First and foremost, it comes without a changelog, just like many other updates that Google releases for its apps on iOS. In other words, discovering what’s new in every update comes down to each and every one of us, especially because new features that can easily be noticed don’t land too often.

However, judging from the new version number, this release is all about bug fixes and code optimizations under the hood.

The new Google Maps version of iOS is 5.44, just a small update from the previous update to version 5.43. The changelog that Google published in the App Store is identical with the one for the previous update, so we can only assume that more refinements have been included in this new release.

Second of all, the feature that you’re hoping to get in Google Maps on CarPlay is still nowhere to be seen.

The release of iOS 13.4 unlocked the maps card on CarPlay, which means Apple finally allows developers to add support for the dashboard in their maps app. Including Google Maps and Waze, that is, as long as Google, which owns both of them, adds support for the Multiview screen in CarPlay.

Google itself doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make the whole thing happen, so while Google Maps would technically be able to replace Apple Maps on the dashboard, this isn’t possible right now because the search company hasn’t developed support for this feature.

So no, the latest update doesn’t bring any change in this regard, which means we’ll have to wait more until Google Maps can be enabled on the CarPlay dashboard.
