Audible is one of the most popular audiobook apps on mobile devices. Needless to say, it comes in really handy when driving because it allows you to listen to content with zero distraction.
But as some Android users discovered lately, the experience when running navigation apps, such as Google Maps and Waze, hasn’t been really flawless, as GPS instructions offered while driving are known to pause the playback without actually resuming it.
The way the whole thing was supposed to work is quite simple: Audible is playing an audiobook on your phone, and whenever an app like Google Maps needs to provide you with voice navigation instructions, it lowers the volume and then increases it again when it’s done.
The problem is a recent Audible update has apparently broken down the whole thing, and whenever the likes of Google Maps and Waze step in to provide offer guidance, the playback is paused and never resumed.
Several users on Google’s forums blame Google Maps for the whole thing, especially because Audible has reportedly said at first the issue wasn’t happening on their side.
“Hey team, as of today, Audible has been completely stopping - as opposed to just pausing - when Google Maps voice navigation occurs. Audible denies any knowledge of it being an issue at their end. Anyone having same issue/ have a fix?” one user posted on December 23.
But as it turns out, the issue was indeed on Audible’s side, and the most recent Android update corrects the whole thing. The official changelog published in the Google Play Store for version 2.66.0 (dated December 28) only points to “bug fixes and enhancements,” but I’ve already received confirmation the new release is supposed to correct the aforementioned problem too.
So there you go; if you’re running Audible side by side with Google Maps and Waze and the playback is paused when getting voice directions, make sure you install the latest version of the app.
