Google has released a new update for Google Maps on iOS, but unfortunately, the most anticipated feature for CarPlay is still missing.
Google Maps is right now the top navigation app on CarPlay, and it’s also the most common replacement for Apple’s very own Maps that comes pre-loaded on the iPhone.
So when Apple released iOS 13.4 and unlocked the CarPlay dashboard to allow users to replace Maps with Google Maps in the navigation card, many were pretty excited, especially because Apple Maps ate up unnecessary space in this multi-view screen without even being used.
Unfortunately, while third-party apps can now use the CarPlay dashboard, developers themselves need to release updates with such functionality, so in the case of Google Maps, the Mountain View-based search giant is the one that must make the whole thing happen.
This is the reason Google Maps updates are something that everybody’s looking for these days, despite Google itself not yet sharing an ETA as to when dashboard support would be released.
The latest version of Google Maps is 5.42, and just like the previous versions, it comes without a changelog. Google says it focused on “bug fixes that improve our product to help you discover new places and navigate to them,” but this is actually the generic changelog that the company ships with every new update.
And while bug fixes are more than welcome, especially as they can help further polish the experience with Google Maps on CarPlay, support for the dashboard view still isn’t included, so everybody’s stuck with Apple Maps for a little longer.
Again, there are no specifics regarding the release date of the dashboard feature in Google Maps and Waze, and the existing beta builds of both apps come without such functionality, which could be an indication that we might have to wait longer than anticipated to get it in an update.
