Google Maps Data Shows We Drink More, Eat a Lot of Sweets

Google Maps remains one of the preferred go-to apps when it comes to navigation software. Naturally, people turn to it whenever they need to find a specific place and get directions to it in a more convenient manner.

Google has provided us with a closer look at the searches people have made on Google Maps, thus comparing the December 2020-January 2021 trends with the ones recorded in December 2019-January 2020 when we were still living a normal life.

As it turns out, quite a lot has changed in the meantime, and needless to say, our traveling interests have been particularly impacted by the global health crisis.

Google Maps numbers show that in January 2020, searches for island destinations increased by no less than 40 percent, while this month, these searches recorded a growth of just 10 percent. Most people are searching for places closer to home, Google says, and ski resorts are among the most sought-after places because they allow for safe social distancing.

On the other hand, it looks like more Google Maps users search for wine shops and liquor stores these days. Back in January, these searches dropped by no less than 40 percent from the previous month, all because of New Year’s resolutions, but this year the decline was just 11% and 6%, respectively.

People may be less committed to abstaining, says Joseph Abou Nakoul, Trends Analyst, Google Maps.

And not only that we drink more, but we also eat more sweets. Searches for ice creams have increased by 10 percent from December. Unfortunately, sweets are mixed with junk food, it seems, as the number of searches for fast food dropped by just 1.5 percent this month versus a 20 percent decline in January 2020.

The good news is that people are still interested in working out, with such searches up 25 percent in both January 2020 and 2021, though it’s believed more users want to do the whole thing in the comfort of their own homes and less close to other people.
