The latest version of Google Maps is crashing on iPhones only a few seconds after the app launches.
By the looks of things, this only happens with Google Maps version 5.48, which is currently the most recent version on iOS. This is odd, to say the least, as Google Maps 5.48 was released on July 15, and I can confirm that the same build worked correctly on my iPhone until yesterday.
But right now, I’m seeing the same problem as everyone else, and several users out there (1, 2) confirm that this is likely a widespread issue affecting those running Google Maps on the iPhone.
At this point, nothing seems to work, and users on reddit claim they’ve tried everything on their devices, all without being able to bring Google Maps back to a working state.
“I can't open the app at all on my iPhone. It was updated last week to version 5.48. The map displays for a second or two, then the app crashes. I've uninstalled/reinstalled it, restarted my phone, offloaded the app, all to no avail,” someone on reddit says.
Some claim that they managed to prevent Google Maps from crashing by disabling GPS, which obviously makes the app rather useless since it can no longer determine your location on the map.
At this point, no other workaround seems to exist and Google is yet to acknowledge the issue, which means that users are all alone in their attempt to fix the whole thing.
The Android version of Google Maps doesn’t seem to be affected.
On another front, Google Maps is yet to receive support for the CarPlay dashboard, so if you updated to version 5.48 hoping to get this feature, you probably ended up disappointed. Google is yet to announce an ETA for this feature in both Google Maps and Waze for iOS and CarPlay.
