Google Maps is used by millions every day, either for navigation or to explore various places across the world, but some have recently come across an error that is driving them nuts.
More specifically, Google Maps shows Mount Everest is located in China, as you can see in the screenshots here, despite the fact that geographically, it’s placed right on the China-Nepal border.
This error, however, have caused anger in the Google Maps userbase, with some of those based in Nepal accusing the company of bias and what they describe as an intentional error.
Some went as far as accusing the search giant of being bribed by China to move Mount Everest beyond the border, while others request authorities to ban all Google services in Nepal until the map is corrected.
“How can Google be so biased towards Nepal that Google is mapping Mt. Everest in China? Is it because of the size that China is much more enormous than Nepal? Has Google been bribed by China to locate Mt. Everest in China?” one user says on Google’s forums.
“Google need to correct location of Mount Everest quickly. Otherwise We want all sites of Google ban [sic] in Nepal,” someone else adds.
Others believe Google is trying to promote fake news, requesting the company to become more “trustworthy” and avoid spreading false information.
Google is yet to provide an answer on what exactly happened and how the location of Mount Everest ended up being changed to China, but for the time being, users can suggest map edits and request the company to correct the issue.
For what it’s worth, Bing Maps, a rival maps service developed by Microsoft, shows Mount Everest on the territory of Nepal, while Apple Maps also appears to move the Earth’s highest mountain above sea level beyond the border in China, as seen in the photo gallery included in the article.
