Google is betting big on YouTube Music, not only as far as the mobile phone experience is concerned, but also when it comes to Android Auto, as the company is now getting ready to kill off Google Play Music once and for all.
But while there’s a lot Google needs to improve about YouTube Music both on the phone and in the car, the search giant clearly takes things gradually on all fronts.
And right now, it looks like the search giant has started working on a new feature that it believes would help improve the music experience on all devices.
Beginning with a new update, YouTube Music will be able to play a summary of all the top songs that users have listened to throughout the year, essentially creating a personalized list that would show up on the main screen both on the phone and on Android Auto.
If this sounds familiar to you, it’s because Spotify, which right now is one of the top rivals to YouTube Music, is already offering something similar on all devices. Spotify Wrapped is a summary of the most popular songs of the year that users listened to in the last 12 months, and it typically goes live in late November or December.
Google is trying a similar approach, and screenshots posted on reddit show that the new playlist already started to show up on some devices, under names such as Top Songs of 2020, Top Pop 2020, and Top Latin 2020. Of course, the names could be different depending on what you’ve listened to this year.
The personalized music experience is a key part of Google’s long-term YouTube Music approach, though right now, the search giant is still struggling to convince former Google Play Music users to give this new service a shot. The company has recently added a free tier to YouTube Music in order to let them listen to music purchased on Google Play Music, as previously all content was locked and required a subscription.
