While Google Maps is the world’s most popular navigation app, it doesn’t necessarily mean everything works flawlessly all the time.
The living proof is a problem discovered last year that is yet to get a fix, though Google officially acknowledged it on its support forums this week.
More specifically, this glitch makes it impossible to shut down Google Maps completely, as the running notification doesn’t go away even if the app itself has already been closed.
At this point, it’s not exactly known what’s causing the problem. On the other hand, users explain on Google’s forums that force quitting the app and sometimes rebooting the phone are the only methods to make the Google Maps notification go away.
“I'm having the same issue as well. I drove to work today, and closed out my app when I arrived. Then, I closed the app again in my building when it said I was now 3 min away. Then it was open asking me to rate the dr. office I share a building with. I've since left for and have returned from a meeting in my office, I have closed it a few more times, and it is still open. This has been a two-hour game of closing the Maps app, and I've just finally decided to close out every single app individually before restarting my phone,” one user explained on the forums.
A Google product expert confirmed on the forums the company “is aware of this issue,” though, for the time being, there’s no ETA as to when a fix could land.
In the meantime, the glitch doesn’t seem to be related to a specific phone model, as users report the same behavior on Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi, and even the Google Pixel. In most cases, rebooting the device is what makes the notification go away, but only until Google Maps is relaunched for navigation.
