Google has just unveiled their latest project held in the emerging South Asian country Bangladesh. Called Google Bus, the company is literally taking to the road to promote the possibilities of connecting online and “hopefully help give half a million undergraduates a better sense of the power and utility of the Internet”.
Sure it’s a marketing venture to promote their own products, but they do, at the same time, struggle to make this world better and we tend to like that.
The bus is not just any traveling vehicle, as it was enhanced with 3G Internet and some other gadgets that should give young fellows a better idea of what the possibilities are.
12 months, 35 locations
According to Google’s statement, the twelve-month journey of over 500 college and university campuses in 35 locations across Bangladesh has began in Dhaka, on Wednesday. Following the capital city of Bangladesh, the bus will make its way to schools in and around major cities including Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Barisal. The IT giant has also created a Google+ community page, where people stay in touch and find out about upcoming stops and events.
“We hope this program equips the country’s next generation of entrepreneurs with the digital tools that will empower them to start and grow their own projects and businesses online,” James McClure, country manager at Google explained. It is now wonder Google went on to develop its ventures in South Asia, considering it’s a huge market still far from being fully connected to the virtual world.
A great country
Bangladesh is the world’s eight-most populous country, with over 160 million people, and among the most densely populated countries. Also known as “The land of rivers” for its domination by the fertile Bengal delta, the world’s largest delta, the South Asian country is identified as a Next Eleven country.
Bangladesh is a developing nation and a rapidly growing market-based economy. It is one of the world’s leading exporters of textiles and garments, as well as fish, seafood and jute, and has globally competitive emerging industries in shipbuilding, life sciences and technology.
As the video below is also pointing out, the country also has a strong social enterprise sector and is the birthplace of microfinance. This is a source of financial services for entrepreneurs and small businesses lacking access to banking and related services.
