YouTube Music keeps making the headlines these days, and this mostly happens because it’s all just a matter of time until Google officially kills off Google Play Music.
And as everybody knows already, YouTube Music is Google’s recommended alternative, as the search giant keeps encouraging users to give it a try regardless of their platform.
For many drivers, the death of Google Play Music is quite a turning point for how they listen to music in their cars, as many decided to migrate to other apps, some of which can only play local media libraries.
But as far as YouTube Music is concerned, the service is getting better, and this happens not only on platforms that power the experience on head units inside the car but also on mobile phones. After all, not everybody has Android Auto or CarPlay in their vehicles, and many are still relying on Bluetooth to listen to music when driving.
The most recent YouTube Music update introduces a highly anticipated feature for iPhone users, as it now features a widget that can be pinned to the home screen.
Support for widgets is a new feature that was announced by Apple in September with the release of iOS 14. This software update is available today for iPhone 6s and newer, and it allows pretty much any app developer to create a widget that can be then enabled in various sizes on the home screen.
The YouTube Music widget is as simple as it could be, as it only displays album artwork and nothing more. In fact, this widget isn’t actually allowed to do more anyway, as the way Apple built them includes lots of restrictions.
iPhone widgets are not interactive, which means they can only display static information that users can’t touch for additional options. And this is the case of YouTube Music too, as the widget does not support live playback controls or anything more advanced.
