Goodyear to Replace NASCAR Tires

Following a very demanding practice sessions at Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday, official NASCAR tire supplier Goodyear decided it will change no less than 1,300 right side tires, after it discovered an unusual amount of tear witnessed following the session.

Goodyear experimented at Bristol with a new right-side tire compound in the hopes that it will give the cars a bit more grip on the revised surface of the track. Unfortunately for Goodyear, the tires, instead of rubbering in (a situation when the worn rubber adheres to the track to provide better grip), have become turning into powder.

According to what Goodyear was able to find, the new tires worn down to the cords in under 30 laps. To avoid that, Goodyear will be replacing them with tires that use the same compound featured on the products raced at the last Bristol race last summer.

"Based on the practice sessions for the Nationwide and Sprint Cup series, we will making a tire compound change for the right-side tires for both series," Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition was quoted as saying by NASCAR. "The Nationwide Series will qualify on the tires they're on and we'll change those tires during a competition yellow at roughly Lap 25.”

"In the Cup Series, they will also make the tire change. [Saturday] morning, the Cup teams will receive one set of the right-side tires to practice on. And they will have an adequate amount for the Cup race on Sunday afternoon," added the competition vice president when announcing the decision.
