Goodyear Develops Air Maintenance Technology for Self Inflating Tires

The manufacturers in the automotive industry continuously stryde to gain space for passengers, determined them to design a spare wheel to a size where it would help the driver reach the closest maintenance point. But Goodyear might have a solution that can solve the problem.

The tire manufacturer is developing a new concept called Air Maintenance Technology that could eliminate the need of spare tires on any vehicle. The AMT system uses a miniaturized pump contained within the tire itself to maintain the optimal pressure. It would be able to overcome all except a major puncture or a blow-out.

“This will become the kind of technological breakthrough that people will wonder how they ever lived without. A tire that can maintain its own inflation is something drivers have wanted for many years. Goodyear has taken on this challenge and the progress we have made is very encouraging. While the technology is complex, the idea behind the AMT system is relatively simple and powered by the tire itself as it rolls down the road,”
Jean-Claude Kihn, Goodyear’s Chief Technology Officer was quoted as saying by The Detroit Bureau.

To avoid a flat tire, another option would be using “run flat” tires with incredibly stiff sidewalls that can continue to be driven even with no air pressure inside them. But eventually the driver will have to find a garage to repair or replace the tire. The AMT system could eliminate that need almost entirely, as it could ensure that the tires could stay inflated under normal conditions. Goodyear has not yet announced when it hopes to bring the AMT to market.
