Goodyear, the world’s third largest tire manufacturer, will assist the U.S. authorities in their effort to promote the 2010 Census.
The company’s fleet of blimps will display a special message on their generously-sized LED displays while flying over sports, entertainment events and various public appearances. This will offer the Census Bureau an important awareness advantage, as a large number of people will sew the campaign.
"Goodyear's work with the Census Bureau literally and figuratively raises the profile of the census and is a much appreciated public service," said Dwight P. Dean, US Census Bureau Regional Director for Detroit. "Between the benefits of the census being broadcast on its world famous blimps and the outreach to employees, Goodyear is helping thousands learn how crucial it is to complete and mail the questionnaire that arrives in March."
The Census-supporting message will run on Goodyear’s three blimps that fly over the U.S.: The Spirit of Goodyear, based in Suffield, Ohio, The Spirit of America, in Carson, Calif. and The Spirit of Innovation, in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Goodyear’s blimp history goes back to 1911, when the company created its first airship envelope. In 1925, the tire maker developed its own blimp, the Pilgrim. Besides the 3 airships that make up Goodyear’s U.S. fleet, the tire producer also operates blimps in other countries - one example would be China. The three U.S. airships are built and operated by the Florida-based Lightship Group and can accommodate up to six passengers each.
