For nearly 26 years, BMW has been hosting the BMW International Open, an event that’s part of the European Tour. At all of these events there’s always been a special prize offered by the Germans to the man that can score a hole-in-one. Guess what? This year, it happened again, marking the 5th time in its history.
Golfer James Heath was the lucky one and he got himself a prize a lot of people out there will envy him for: a BMW i8. That’s right, James gets to drive home in a brand new hybrid sportscar from BMW and he was ecstatic about it:
“I am blown away. I’m virtually speechless.The BMW i8 is a stunning car and worth 137.000 Euros. It more than triples the highest cheque I’ve ever made.”
The 31-year-old even explained how he managed such a good shot: “I aimed about four yards left of the flag because of the water on the right. It pitched just past the flag and spun back in. This is my fifteenth hole in one – the second in professional tournament play – but the others pale into insignificance by comparison.”
The Englishman aced the 16th hole (par 3, 156 metres) on the final round of the BMW International Open. Turning pro in 2004, Heath can now brag with his most valuable shot that could easily be considered worth €137,000.
Over the years, there were other brilliant golfers that managed to pull such stunts, as we said earlier. The most recent one was two years ago, when another Englishman left with a new set of wheels: Andrew Marshall won a BMW 640i Gran Coupe in 2012.
Before that two Frenchmen claimed two other cars. In 2010, Jean-Francois Lucquin won a BMW 535i Sedan followed by Raphael Jacquelin with a BMW Z8. The first hole-in-one award was won by American Jay Townsend back in 1991. His prize was a BMW 325i Cabrio.
