Golf 7 R Taken to 420 HP by B&B Automobiltechnik

We all miss the VR6. It had character and presence in a way few other models of its time did. However, even though it packs a downsized 2-liter turbo, the new Golf R has a fantastically fruity exhaust note and packs more power and torque than any Vdub hatch ever.

For most people, 300 horsepower and 0 to 100 km/h in under 5 seconds is good enough, but of course having the fastest Golf R in Germany is a tempting idea. We really don't know if B&B Automobiltechnik have achieved that, but they most certainly have tried hard.

Their tuning project for the fastest VW ever made comes in stages, the most powerful taking things to Audi R8 levels of Performance.

Starting from the bottom, stage 1 adds 60 hp and 70 Nm of torque for a total of 360 HP (265 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). It's a simple engine chip tune costing just €1,300, well worth looking at if you own the new R. Next up, stage 2 costs a hefty €4,000 and lifts that output to 385 HP (283 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft). To get the 2.0 TSI bursting with power, B&B has had to install a new intermediate exhaust pipe with sports catalyzer, reducing back pressure.

Finally, if you have almost €10,000 to spend on engine upgrades, the Germans can take your Golf R to 420 hp and 530 Nm of torque (391 lb-ft). We don't know what that means in acceleration figures because stage 3 hasn't been timed, but B&B says stage 2 will do 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds with a manual. Take that Porsches and Audis!
