Golf 7 R Onboard POV Autobahn Test

The Schoner Golf of the moment is of course the new R, based on the seventh generation compact car platform. It's the sort of hot hatch that can do seemingly everything and has armies of fans drooling over options lists and specks sheets.

Speaking of specs, the automatic version (six-speed DSG) is the first factory-built Golf to go under 5 seconds with its 0 to 100 km/h. That puts it in the same league as a Porsche Boxster or, if you want to be all executive about it, the BMW 5 Series 550i model, with a 4.4-liter V8. Impressive stuff, at least on paper. But what's it like in the real world.

We found a nice video of the new Golf 7 R blitzing the German autobahns. If you're considering dropping about €40,000 on one of these things or a rival from the other German companies, it's worth watching.

At high speed, the Golf R's suspension is drama-free. Volkswagen offers this car with adaptive springs that make it as refined as a family car. The sound of the engine makes up for this, bellowing out a semi-artificial sound. Being driven in Sport mode all the time, the R sticks to the higher half of its rev band, but there's no actual kick of acceleration.

Predictable and boring? Some might say so. We'll leave it up to you to decide if this 300 horsepower, all-whee drive Golf is a good match to the Autobahn tracks.
