Go-Ahead London Receives Ford Transit EV Vans

After a month-long trial run in the United Kingdom, bus operator Go-Ahead London took delivery of the first Smith Edison electric vans, to be used as support vehicles for the buses in London. The purchase of the vans are part of the company's Go Green program.

"We are committed to a cleaner, safer environment and to reducing our carbon footprint. The electric vans are simply another step towards this goal." John Trayner, Go-Ahead London managing director said in a release.

The vans in question are refitted Ford Transit vans, converted by Smith Electric Vehicles in Washington. They are powered by lithium-ion batteries which provide a top speed of 50 mph and a range of up to 100 miles on a single charge. To get the vans back up to shape after the battery is depleted, the operator must plug it for 6 to eight hours.

Both the range and speed of the vans are considered enough to meet Go Ahead's demands. The bus operator will use them to distribute parts and provide road assistance to impaired public transportation vehicles.

The company says it is working with London's Boris Johnson to create an electric vehicle appeal for the capital's residents.

"Go-Ahead are pleased to be working with the Mayor of London's initiative to encourage the use and development of electric vehicles and we are committed to converting our entire bus support fleet in London to electric power as soon as possible," Frank Thorpe, Go-Ahead development manager added.
