GM’s Dan Akerson Talks Re-Establishing Cadillac

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson says Cadillac could be re-established as a luxury brand 2020, adding that it will take years for its product to achieve the pricing power of brands such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

“We’re going to have to compete (with BMW, Mercedes-Benz) on every aspect of luxury, quality, reliability, durability, and price. And for a while we’re going to have to be more competitive. We’re building a brand now and I don’t really care about this quarter or this year, I’m worried about where Cadillac will be in 2020. I’m looking to close this gap in the next seven to ten years,” Akerson told Automotive News.

Other key strategies in Cadillac’s revival as a strong luxury player are luring younger buyers and making better use of the brand’s dealerships nationwide.

Meanwhile, Akerson also wants GM to begin a major strategic shift in Europe that will eliminate the “conflict and confusion” between the company’s Chevrolet and Opel brands.
