It’s been nearly four years since General Motors dismantled the Hummer brand and word has it the Detroit manufacturer is planning on reintroducing a large and off-road capable SUV to its lineup. Not by reviving the aforementioned brand, but using GMC division.
According to The Car Guide, quoting an unnamed designer from GMC, the company is currently “in the process of putting together an off-road-oriented model that will follow in the Hummer’s foot steps. The source adds that this vehicle won’t be a beefed-up Terrain, but an entirely new one that’s “purpose built to tackle the rough stuff”.
Unfortunately, there’s no word on when such an SUV would arrive, or if the lineup will also include a pickup truck version. Back in January, GM product chief Mark Reuss said that GMC could get a stand-alone model that won’t be just another rebadged Chevrolet. Could this vehicle be a replacement for the defunct Hummer? Or was Reuss talking about a smaller SUV? We really don’t know, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any details that may surface.
The Hummer brand was founded in 1992, when AM General began selling civilian versions of its full size Humvee army trucks. The Hummer name was acquired by General Motors in late 1999. The Hummer H1 was built until 2006, but GM introduced its own design as the H2 in 2003. The smaller H3, which was underpinned by the GMT355 platform used in the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon compact trucks, was launched in 2005.
Sales of the latter dropped from more than 50,000 units in 2006 to about only 7,500 examples in 2009, a few months before being discontinued. The last Hummer H3 was completed in May 2010.
