Excluding buses and military trucks, GMC mainly offers rebadged Chevrolet vehicles which are positioned as premium and fetch a few extra dollars. It’s been like that for a very long time, with an extremely short exceptions list.
Recently, GM decided to return to the American mid-size pickup truck market with a redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Colorado. Naturally, the Bowtie-badged truck got a new face and a GMC logo to become the upscale Canyon, also to be offered for the 2015 model year.
There’s no word on what Chevrolet model is inline for a badge transplant, but GM product chief Mark Reuss says we could be in for a surprise in the future. Specifically, GMC could get a stand-alone model that has nothing (or little) to do with Chevy.
“The health of GMC is astonishingly good from a consideration standpoint,” Reuss said at the Detroit Auto Show. Although he declined to go into specifics, Automotive News said that GMC’s design studio is currently working on several concepts.
