Remember the Sonoma? GMC replaced that truck with the Colorado in 2003, but in the process, the street-oriented ZRX trim level has been abandoned. A trademark filing with the USPTO from August 15th might change things for the 2021 model year of the mid-size pickup, which prepares to get the AT4 treatment from the Silverado 1500.
Auto Guide explains that “ZRX models featured the venerable 4.3-liter V6 engine and a four-speed automatic transmission,” sending the suck-squeeze-bang-blow to the rear wheels and a street-tuned suspension. Decals, bed rails, and a few more extras distinguished this Sonoma from the rest. The Chevrolet S10 Xtreme was the closest thing to it, but as you’re well aware, both the S10 and Xtreme have been ditched as well.

The Canyon ZRX, if it will ever happen, would be a rear-drive affair with a lowered suspension kit for more street cred. A tonneau cover is also likely, but it’s hard to guess what kind of engine options will be available. GMC could make a case for the 2.7-liter Tripower in the Silverado, a four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque.

On the other hand, don’t forget that GMC could’ve wanted the trademark back for a one-off concept. But looking at the bigger picture, General Motors can’t afford to kick back without a care in the world considering how old the Colorado and Canyon are. The Colorado was shown in 2011 at the Bangkok Motor Show, and over the years, it’s been badge-engineered into many products such as the HSV SportsCat in Australia.

The biggest problems of the ‘Rado and Canyon in the United States and the rest of the world are Toyota and Ford with the HiLux, Tacoma, and Ranger. On that note, the fit and finish of General Motors interiors are a bit lacking, as is the build quality of the American automaker following the automotive industry’s crisis of 2008 and 2009.
