The announcement was made by GM during President Obama's visit to the Detroit-Hamtramck facility. During his visit, the President was also given the green light from the Secret Service to get aboard a new Volt and drive it for 40 feet (12 meters).
“The Chevrolet Volt provides drivers with the latest technology, outstanding innovation, and something no other electric vehicle can provide – peace of mind,” Edward Whitacre GM CEO said when announcing the decision.
“We are very proud to host the President of the United States at this plant, where the future of the American automobile industry is being built today by the men and women of General Motors.”
As announced last week, the Volt will be available at first in California, New York, Michigan, Connecticut, Texas, New Jersey and the Washington D.C.
The car is priced $41,000, or $33,500 net of full federal income tax credit. A lease program is also available for as low as $350 for 36 months and a down payment of only $2,500.
The PHEV is covered by 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage, 5-year/100,000-mile roadside assistance and courtesy transportation, 5-year/100,000-mile limited gas engine coverage, 6-year/100,000-mile corrosion protection coverage and 8-year/100,000 miles battery warranty.
GM is already taking orders for the Volt and yesterday's announcement comes as a result of the increased interest shown by the customers, the manufacturer says.
