GM to Design Two More Volt-Based Electric Cars

As Chevrolet Volt is expected to be one of the more advanced electric vehicles ever designed, General Motors aims to take full advantage of this aspect and plans to design two more cars based on this Chevy and help it revamp sales in the United States. The American automaker mentioned in the viability plan it submitted to the government on February 17 that it will launch new hybrid and plug-in vehicles in the next few years, including cars and trucks.

"General Motors is also investing significantly in hybrid and plug-in vehicles, for both cars and trucks, and offers 9 hybrid models in 2009 (more than any other manufacturer), a number which will increase to 14 models in 2012 and 26 models in 2014. The Chevrolet Volt is included in this count, as are two additional models sharing the Volt‘s extended range electric vehicle (EREV) technology," General Motors mentioned in the viability plan.

However, the company hasn't provided more details about these models. “We're not prepared to provide any specifics on the other vehicles at this time,” Robert Peterson was quoted as saying by freep.com.

General Motors says the Chevy Volt is the perfect car for Americans as most US residents drive less than 40 miles per day, which coincides with the battery autonomy of the Chevrolet model. GM already announced plans to display Opel Ampera, a newly-designed car based on Volt, at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

"With a majority of Americans driving their vehicles less than 40 miles per day, the Chevrolet Volt—providing up to 40 miles on a single electrical charge—should be attractive to those seeking to use little if any gasoline. The development costs of high-technology vehicles like the Volt are significant, but so are the long-term benefits that come from increased energy efficiency and independence. Working together, the industry and the Federal Government can and should explore ways and means of accelerating the adoption of such fuel-saving technologies," GM wrote in the official documents.
