General Motors has asked Chevrolet dealers to stop selling certain 2013 and 2014 model year Chevrolet Cruze compact cars, Automotive News reports.
The request that was sent to US dealers via e-mail on Thursday asks that sales of Cruze models equipped with 1.4-liter turbo engines are to stop immediately. According to the aforementioned source, who obtained the said e-mail, GM didn’t give a reason for its action.
“Instructions for releasing the involved vehicles from this stop delivery will be provided in the near future,” the memo reads, fueling rumors that the stop-delivery order might be followed by a recall.
Last month, GM issued a recall for about 1.6 million 2003-2007 Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn models that may fail to deploy due to a faulty ignition switch.
Linked to 113 deaths, the call back spawned a thorough investigation at General Motors, which, in turn, prompted the automaker to announce two additional recalls this month.
The first batch includes 1.5 million Buick, GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac sedans, SUVs and vans, while the second one targets nine models from three brands summing 355 vehicles. The latter also lists the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze with automatic transmission.
The Chevrolet Cruze is GM’s top-selling car in the United States. Besides the 1.4-liter turbo, the compact can also be had with a 1.8-liter naturally-aspirated unit and a 2.0-liter turbo mill.
