GM Sets New Sales Record in China

We already knew that China is going to become one of the largest car markets for most manufacturers around the world but it seems like General Motors is particularly focusing on this region nowadays. And yes, such a market move is pretty understandable given the difficult times the company is experiencing in the United States. But getting back to China, General Motors has just announced that together with the local joint ventures it managed to reach a new monthly sales record.

Thanks to growing demand for Buick and Wuling models, domestic sales jumped 50.0 percent on an annual basis to 151,084 units, General Motors announced in a statement for the press.

Specifically, Shanghai GM recorded a sale increase in April of 34.7 percent to 55,245 vehicles, with demand for Buick models growing as much as 63.6 percent to 38,071 units. Furthermore, deliveries of the Excelle lower-premium sedan rose by 120 percent to 22,078 units while sales of the Regal upper-medium sedan totaled 6,368 units.

The Wuling Sunshine minivan, courtesy of SAIC-GM-Wuling, remained China's best-selling vehicle, with 50,491 units sold in April. GM's joint venture also delivered 18,176 Wuling Rongguang high-end minivans and 5,545 Chevrolet Spark mini-cars.

“Coming off a record month in March, GM is very satisfied with the ongoing strength in domestic sales of both of our joint ventures,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “We are particularly pleased with the resurgence of the Buick brand. Our new product offensive, which is still in its early stages, has helped get customers into our showrooms and increase demand across the board.”
