The achievement came after just four months since GM launched the service, and it goes to show what can happen when automakers get involved in mobility solutions.

Instead of just selling and servicing vehicles, carmakers are pursuing the idea of personal mobility solutions, which will help them make more money without putting more cars on the road.

GM’s proposition on the matter is called Maven, and is a service developed with the experience of Lyft. Currently, Maven+ is serving over 5,000 residents in New York and Chicago, and the fleet for the latter has grown significantly in eight weeks.

Along with the celebration, General Motors has announced that it has introduced Maven to two new cities, Boston and Washington D.C.

In total, Maven only serves five markets, but they are significant enough to accommodate the mileage mentioned in the title of this story. Maven started out in New York City and Chicago, and was then expanded to Ann Arbor (Michigan), Boston, and Washington D.C. The Detroit-based Corporation has not announced when and if it plans a US-wide rollout of the service.

In Chicago, Maven City members can rent a car starting at $8 an hour, insurance and fuel included. Customers who have already been registered can get one of 30 initially available vehicles from one of the 15 sites set up in the city.

Once they finish with a car, users are requested to use the provided gas card to fill up to “at least a quarter of tank capacity,” so that they do not make an inconvenience to the next user and do not get an additional charge.

All the cars have seamless smartphone integration, and the service prides itself on transparency in fares and operation. The Express Drive service, which allows Lyft drivers to rent a car from Maven and provide ride-sharing services, has expanded to a fleet of 200 vehicles in just eight weeks.

Maven’s Express Drive will be extended to the rest of the markets in which the service is available by the end of this year. According to GM’s internal statistics, the Chevrolet Volt is the most popular vehicle to rent from Maven.
