Morrissey, the former lead singer of The Smiths, has written a letter to General Motors’ CEO, Mary Barra.
Instead of being a disgruntled customer, Steven Patrick Morrissey, known mostly by his last name, politely asked General Motors to offer a Vegan leather option for the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt and Volt. The letter was written by the singer on behalf of PETA, which has published a story on a leather supplier in Brazil that delivers hides for many automakers.
In short, PETA has found that cows are not treated correctly in Brazil, and their skins end up in automobiles without customers being aware of the awful things that have happened to the animals that lost their skin for a car’s upholstery.
According to PETA, many automotive companies are supplied by the Brazilians at JBS, from America’s Big Three to Toyota, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Land Rover, Mazda, Lexus, and several more.
While it may seem unusual for a rock star to ask things of automakers besides commissioning custom vehicles, Morrissey’s request is not out of the ordinary.
Instead, the British singer leveraged his popularity to attract attention to a matter that does not bother most people because they do not know the truth regarding the situation.
Evidently, the singer in question is a vegan, and some of the venues he is invited to do not cook or sell meat while he is performing, all out of respect for his activism.
At first, some of you might be tempted to laugh at a rock star that has become an animal rights activist, but all you need to do is see PETA’s video on how those hides are obtained in Brazil, and you might also pledge never to get a leather interior in your car again.
It is worth noting that Morrissey has a point in his request, as the 2017 Chevrolet Volt and Bolt models are marketed as eco-friendly vehicles, Billboard notes. As far as CO2 emissions go, they are eco-friendly, but their appeal is diminished to those that care about animals because of the lack of a vegan leather option. Tesla’s Model X, for example, comes with an all-vegan interior.
