GM Reveals Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial

One of the greatest men in American history, Martin Luther King, Jr., will soon get another recognition of his merits in shaping the modern world, after the National Memorial dedicated to him will be officially presented on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. On August 28.

Until then, however, one of the biggest supporters of the memorial, the General Motors Foundation, decided to show the world how the project is shaping up. GM received one of only two replicas of the Memorial, which it will donate to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

“This replica of the Memorial will reach many people from around the world who visit the Charles H. Wright Museum here in Detroit and will help to spread Dr. King’s message of democracy, justice, hope and love,” said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard .

“The GM Foundation is pleased to support the MLK Foundation in honoring Dr. King. He continues to be a model of hope and a great humanitarian, whose story of striving for equality should never be forgotten.”

The Martin Luther King Jr. memorial will be placed on the National Mall in the nation's capital, in between the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials. Some of you might remember the spot as the place where Luther delivered the I Have a Dream speech on August 28, 1963.

“The GM Foundation and General Motors were among the first to contribute to the legacy of Dr. King by sponsoring this important memorial,” said Harry Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Foundation CEO. “We are grateful for their generous contribution and commitment to uphold the ideals most important to Dr. King.”
