American automaker giant General Motors recently announced a recall involving 303,100 Chevrolet Impalas due to problems with the front seatbelts in 2009 and 2010 model-year vehicles.
The notice posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that GM is recalling the respective models “for failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 210 ‘seatbelt assembly anchorages’.”
It appears there have been 32 reports of problems involving the belts requiring warranty repairs. According to some media reports, this issue has been under investigation since mid-2009, though GM says it has no reports of deaths or injuries related to the problem.
The official announcement revealed that the “front safety belt webbing may not have been properly secured to the lap belt anchor pretensioner mounted to the side of the seat nearest the door. As a result, the safety belt may not restrain the occupant as intended during a crash.” This, of course, could result in injury to the occupant.
A letter will go out to owners later this month announcing their vehicle is being recalled for inspection. In all, 192,922 Chevrolet Impalas from the 2009 model-year will be impacted by the recall, along with 110,178 from the 2010 model-year. In addition, the recall will affect 19,000 vehicle sold in Canada.
Owners will be asked to take their vehicles to a dealer for inspection of the anchors and pretensioners and, if necessary, for repairs. This means the dealers will reinstall the affected anchors. Just as expected, the company will make the repairs at no charge.
