GM Recalls 26,000 Trucks

A problem that appeared to be small, which started in December 2010, is slowly growing in proportions for American manufacturer GM. In the last month of last year, GM announced it would be recalling 1,262 trucks manufactured in the US. Now, in the first month of the new year, the recall grew exponentially.

The car maker announced that the initial safety recall would be expanded to 26,751 vehicles, which includes the following models. Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Cadillac EXT, Chevrolet Avalanche, Colorado, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.

The problem with all these cars is a rear axle cross pin that may have been improperly heat-treated. Because of this, the pin could fracture, causing the axle to lock while driving. The problem, as you might think, is quite serious.

“If the pin fractures and becomes displaced within the rear axle, the driver may hear a banging noise coming from the axle.  If the pin shifts out of position, it could create an interference condition and cause the rear axle to lock. The driver may not be able to maintain directional control of the vehicle, which could lead to a crash,” GM said in a statement.

So far, GM admits it is aware of one incident in which a driver experienced a loss of power to the axle, but no crash resulted from the incident. In fact, says GM, no crash related to this fault has been reported.
As usual, the recalled trucks will be repaired by GM free of charge. Until the trucks are actually brought to the dealerships for repairs, GM urges their owners not to drive the respective trucks.
