As if the economic turmoil which slashed its sales and put its future in doubt wasn't enough, General Motors is now recalling 1,798 2009 Hummer H3T models to install a new fuel tank front strap support. A notification issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warns that "some of these vehicles have a condition in which the fuel tank front support strap may fracture," a glitch that could eventually lead to a crash.

If the front support strap breaks, "the fuel tank would be supported by the rear support strap and stone shield only," NHTSA mentioned in the advisory. "Continued use of the vehicle may eventually fracture the rear support strap and shield fasteners," it added, emphasizing that the fuel tank could separate from the vehicle increasing the risk of a crash.

Obviously, dealers will install a new-design fuel tank front support strap free of charge, with recalls expected to begin on April 10, 2009.

The 2009 Hummer H3T is powered by a 3.7-liter engine that develops a maximum power of 245 hp at 5800 and a torque of 242 lb-ft at 4600 rpm. The engine helps the vehicle reach a top speed of 98.1 mph (158 km/h), with fuel consumption standing around 17 mpg (13.8 l/100km) in combined cycle.

The car was displayed for the first time to the general public at the 2004 Los Angeles Auto Show as a concept model, while the production version was showcased in Chicago in 2008. Sales of the 2009 model began in August 2008, with the whole range including a total of four trims: the standard version, H3T Adventure, H3T Luxury and H3T Alpha.
