Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the Takata problem is far from over. One of the carmakers required to initiate recalls by the Amended Consent Order is the biggest fish of the Big Three in Detroit.
General Motors is much obliged to recall approximately 1.9 million of its full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles to replace the passenger-side front airbags covered by the Takata defect information report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in May. “Although GM does not believe that a safety defect exists at this time, the company is filing a preliminary recall in cooperation with NHTSA,” reads a statement from the manufacturer.
GM tells that it isn’t aware of any inflator ruptures during 44,000 crash deployments. Furthermore, General Motors assures for the safety of the said inflators due to “the unique Takata inflator made for GM’s vehicles.”
The American manufacturer mentions features such as “greater venting, unique propellant wafer configurations and machined steel end caps,” and that “the inflators are packaged in the instrument panel in such a way as to minimize exposure to moisture from the climate control system.” However, you can never be too sure, which is why General Motors will continue to test and monitor Takata airbags in its vehicles.
Regarding those 1.9 million vehicles included in the preliminary recall announced by General Motors, affected models include the 2007 to 2011 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban; GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL; Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT and Escalade ESV; and 2009 - 2011 MY Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500 pickups.
Owners can check if their vehicle is subjected to this preliminary recall by entering the vehicle identification number in the search bar of the GM Recall Center. You can also call the General Motors customer service at 1-866-467-9700 for additional information on the matter.
