GM Readies CNG Vans

As the only major manufacturer in the US to offer a one-source van (Compressed Natural Gas) CNG option for its products, GM announced over the weekend it had finished working on the CNG system which would be fitted into the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.

Both vans, which come with the CNG option, are powered by the Vortec 6.0L V8 engine, modified by GM's engineers to accommodate hardened exhaust valves and intake and exhaust valve seats. The CNG options integrated into the vans are EPA and CARB compliant.

“Our focus from the beginning has been to offer fleet customers a simple ‘check the box’ approach with our CNG Chevrolet Express and Savana vans,” said Brian Small, general manager, GM Fleet and Commercial Operations.

“Our robust production process is a key enabler and certainly separates us from any competitive offering.”

The CNG-powered vans were presented by GM in October, at the Green Fleet Conference in San Diego. The models are ready for the market, GM planning to sell them starting at $41,890 (van and CNG option included).

The conversion of the van is not made by GM itself, but by Productive Concepts (PCI), a company that specializes in alternative fuels conversions. The vans roll off the assembly lines and head to Union City, Indiana, where PCI fits the CNG system and ensures full emissions compliance.

“We’ve made choosing a CNG or LPG van easier for our customers,” Joyce Mattman, director of GM’s commercial products said when the release of the vans was announced. “No other manufacturer offers a commercial CNG or LPG option that provides a solution with this level of support and availability.”
