GM Pumps $109 Million into Flint, Bay City, for Engine Manufacturing

With three of its newest models promising to become major hits on the market, American manufacturer GM plans to take full advantage of the opportunities the Volt, Cruze and Sonic will create and said last week that will focus extensively on enlarging and sustaining the production of the three badges.

The first step GM is taking towards insuring the three have what it takes to make it on the market is the $109 million investment GM plans to make in the Flint and Bay City facilities in order to support the production of engines for both current and future versions of the models.

“This investment marks the second major increase in engine and engine component output in less than six months - a sign that GM is moving quickly to meet growing demand for more fuel-efficient cars,” said Terri Burden, Flint Engine Operations plant manager.

Part of the money will be used by GM to help boost the production of the new 1.4l engine it currently uses on the Cruze and Volt (as range extender) and that later will be fitted on the Sonic. The rest will be used to help support operations that lead to the manufacturing of connecting rods and camshafts used in the engine.
