It’s no longer a secret that May 16th is the day we’ll get to see the debut of the long-awaited 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. Even GM product chief Mark Reuss looks forward to the day, considering what the official told Fox News about the sixth-gen Camaro.
The General Motors vice president of Global Product Development told Gary Gastelu of Fox News at the New York International Auto Show that “there are some really cool things in the Camaro, that are quite different than the [all-new] Malibu, [or the Cadillac] CT6.”
When Mark Reuss was asked about the 2016 Camaro’s efficiency, go-faster credentials and handling prowess compared to what the S550 Mustang boasts with, the official didn’t fail to surprise. Reuss reportedly drove the Ford Motor Company and Chevrolet's pony cars back to back, having to say the following about the sixth-gen 'Maro: “I’m confident. Very confident.”
In basic English, that translates to “game on.” If anything, the GM Alpha platform-underpinned 2016 Chevrolet Camaro promises to be lighter than 3,502 lbs (1,588 kilograms), and it will be offered with three powerplants. In the SS’ case, we’re looking at a C7 Corvette-derived LT1 small-block V8 with up to 460 HP.
If that figure applies to the production-ready 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS, then the 2015 Ford Mustang GT’s 435 horsepower 5-liter Coyote V8 engine isn’t enough to keep the golden bowtie’s sports car at bay.
Other than the 6.2-liter V8, the all-new Camaro will offer a 3.6-liter LGX V6 mated to the similarly all-new Hydra-Matic 8L45 8-speed automatic. On the 2016 Cadillac CT6, these two channel 335 horsepower and 284 lb-ft (385 Nm) to all four wheels of the full-size luxury sedan.
Last but not least, the entry-level powertrain of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will be a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder. Unfortunately, it’s still a mystery if it will have 265 HP like on the base CT6 or 272-plus HP.
