GM May Scrap Pontiac, GMC

Most of us know by now that GM is planning, as part of its restructuring scheme, to split in two, separating the good brands it manages from the bad ones. Whether it will go into bankruptcy (the most likely outcome) or not, the company is seriously looking into the matter and already gives a lot of consideration to which of its eight US brands to sacrifice on the crisis' shrine. But who's been bad, who's been nice?

With the US government holding money in one hand and an axe in the other, GM decided that the most likely candidates for being put to sleep, aside for Saturn and Hummer, are its Pontiac and GMC brands, bloomberg.com reported. Out of the two, the most likely to survive is GMC (the second largest brand after Chevrolet), who's light trucks are more likely to make an impact than Pontiac's 1960s-1970s descendent cars are.

That something will happen to the two is clear. What exactly that is nobody knows. Just because of this fact, the fate of Pontiac and GMC are on this week's meetings agenda to be held between GM and a team lead by Harry Wilson.

On GM's good side stand Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick. The first two are the manufacturer's best selling brands in the US. Buick on the other hand appeals to consumers in China.

The other two we mentioned earlier, Saturn and Hummer are already posted as "for sale" by their mother company. GM says that an offer for Saturn was already made by an equity firm called Black Oak Partners, together with a few of Saturn's dealers. As for Hummer, it is "days away from being sold".

Update on April 17th - GM denies reports of scrapping Pontiac, GMC
