GM Invests in Baltimore Transmission Plant

The projected success American manufacturer GM expects it will have with the Chevrolet Volt and the models which will build on it has prompted a new investment into the Baltimore Transmission Plant.

The facility will be partially converted to accommodate electric motors production and other vehicle electrification components. GM will invest $23.5 million into the plant which is to become the first electric motor manufacturing unit operated by a major US carmaker.

“This will allow us to strengthen our core electrification components expertise,” said GM Manufacturing Manager Arvin Jones. “We’ll have more to say about specific products later.”

This is not the first investment GM is making this year into the Baltimore plant. In the beginning of 2010, GM announced a bigger investment, worth $246 million. The money are being used to create an electric drive production facility.

Most of the parts to be manufactured in Baltimore will be used on existing models, but GM is also gearing up for a new vehicle which will be using the next generation rear-wheel drive Two-mode Hybrid system.

This is the second expansion announcement made by GM this month. Two weeks ago, the carmaker announced that the production of the next-generation Ecotec four-cylinder engine will be handled by the Spring Hill engine plant. This announcement came with the promise of a $246 million investment and the addition of several hundred jobs at the plant.

The Spring Hill plant is currently building three types of Ecotec powerplants, the 2.4l with direct injection, the Ecotec 2.0L DI Turbo and the Ecotec 2.4L Multiport Fuel Injection.
