General Motors has announced it has repaired 39 percent of the of 377,888 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks recalled over a possible fire hazard earlier this month, adding that the preliminary numbers for the vehicles sold in the United States were updated from 303,000 to 324,970.
The recall affects 2014 model year trucks fitted with 4.3-liter V6 and 5.3 liter V8 engines. GM said the vehicles are being called back so that dealers can fix a software glitch that could lead to overheating of exhaust components and engine compartment fires.
"The repair will take about 20 minutes, although dealership wait times can vary. Until then, customers are urged to avoid leaving their trucks to idle unattended," GM noted in a statement about two weeks ago.
The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2014 GMC Sierra were introduced last year. The former was named the 2014 North American Truck of the Year.
