GM Enhances Recall Process

General Motors will enhance its vehicle recall process, as the company will allow its customers to check for unrepaired safety, non-compliance and emission recalls through Carfax, the well-known vehicle history information provider.

GM has sent Carfax a database that contains millions of vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for vehicles that are involved in active recall campaigns. This will allow used car buyers and sellers to access the information through Carfax Vehicle History Reports, a process that is expected to increase the completion rates on open recalls. This is necessary, as a research study shows that 80 percent of GM owners complete the recall repairs within 18 months of being notified about the issue.

We know some people do not take their vehicles in for recall repairs when they get their letters. Carfax makes it easy for consumers to find out whether a vehicle they are considering has an open recall and increases the chances of that repair being made,” said Jamie Hresko, GM vice president of Global Quality. “If that recall is handled well in the dealership, it can lead to more satisfied customers.

Open recall information is important for any used car buying decision,” said Gerry Bayer, vice president of Carfax. “Carfax continues to work with automotive leaders like GM to make this and other important details readily available to car buyers and sellers through Carfax Vehicle History Reports.

Carfax offers used car information reports for millions of vehicles annually. It uses a car’s VIN to instantly generate a report, relying on a database of over 7 billion records reported by more than 34,000 data sources. The company’s reports are free at most GM dealerships for the carmaker’s Pre-Owned and used vehicles.
