GM Donates 30 GMC Sierra for Haiti

After yesterday German manufacturer Daimler announced it will donate 20 Fuso Canter trucks to help the Haitian relief effort, it's time for American carmaker GM to answer former Presidents Bill Clinton's call for 100 trucks.

GM says it will back up the effort coordinated by William J. Clinton Foundation with two of the trucks already present in Miami, at the NFL Little Haiti Outreach Event held at the Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center.

“Everyone in America has been affected in some way by this tragedy,"
said Susan Docherty, GM Vice President Sales, Service and Marketing and GM Foundation Board member. “That includes GM employees, families and friends.  GMC and the NFL are visiting the heart of the Haitian community in South Florida to show our support.”

The rest will be on site in Haiti mid-February at the request of Edmond Mulet, acting head of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Haiti, with the Clinton Foundation providing transit of the vehicles to Haiti.

“Immediate needs in Haiti include basic supplies and reliable transportation that can handle rugged and mountainous terrain,” said GM Foundation Chairman John T. Montford. “We believe the donation of 30 GMC trucks can have an immediate and beneficial impact on relief efforts in Haiti.”

So far, the worldwide relief effort seems to have gotten stuck in the Dominican Republic, where most aid materials and supplies arrive. Due to the lack of trucks and the still covered in debris streets, most of the materials sent for Haiti are still stuck at Dominican airports.
