GM Developing Full-Windscreen Head-Up Display

After the current generation of the Chevrolet Corvette was introduced to the market, both the media and the public were pleased by the car’s abilities and praised its dynamic qualities.

After the obvious wave of enjoyment started by the straight-line and cornering performance passed, people started noticing other interesting features, such as the car’s head-up display. This allows the driver to keep his eyes on the road and obtain crucial information at the same time - for example, one can see how the speed evolves while drifting through a corner, an action that normally takes a serious amount of effort.

Now, General Motors announces that it is developing a much more complex system together with several U.S. universities, one that would expand the concept.

The new system uses data gathered from an army of vehicle sensors and cameras and project road images on the entire surface of the windscreen, through the use of ultra violet lasers. The windshield features a visible light-emitting transparent phosphors coating. When the lasers sends their invisible light beams to the phosphors, these turn the windshield into a transparent display.

Let’s say you’re driving in fog, we could use the vehicle’s infrared cameras to identify where the edge of the road is and the lasers could ‘paint’ the edge of the road onto the windshield so the driver knows where the edge of the road is,” said Thomas Seder, group lab manager of GM’s research and development division

The full-windshield head-up display can also use a road sign reading technology, a feature already introduce by Opel on the Insignia. However, Seder said that the new system isn’t destined for production use - only some of its features will be present on GM cars in the near future.
