GM Creates Talking Cars

Talking vehicles aren’t a new concept. The first example that comes to our mind when we think about this is KITT, the automotive start of the 80s’ Knigt Rider series. However, bringing the concept to reality is a feat that hasn’t been achieved yet - we are talking about series production here.

Well, it seems like the wait is over, as GM is bringing talking cars to consumers. Ok, the American company hasn’t exactly created a taking car, but it might have come up with the next best thing. The GMC Arcadia can now send regular diagnostic e-mail messages to the owner using OnStar technology.

The technology enables vehicles to automatically give themselves a health physical. The industry-first innovation then allows vehicles to “talk” to their owners by sending them regular diagnostic e-mail messages,” stated the press release.

The self-diagnosis monitors tire pressure, remaining oil life, odometer readings and well as deeper issues. The technology has been created by Shane McCutchen, who credits programming and childhood video games playing for coming up with this.

As a kid, using a computer meant writing your own programs,” said McCutchen. “Most computers didn’t come prepackaged with a lot of software in those days.  Instead, they shipped with a programming language like BASIC pre-installed, and you had to code your own games and programs.

McCutchen is now looking to develop new innovations that can take OnStar technology to a new level.

What can we say, we’re already preparing to take the Arcadia out to a coffee.
