GM Confirms Lansing Investment

As hinted since yesterday, American manufacturer GM announced a significant investment in the Lansing Grand River assembly plant, the place where a new small Cadillac model (unofficially, that's the ATS) will be manufactured from 2011.

The $190 million to be invested by GM will be used to upgrade the plant and add a second shift which will create some 600 new jobs. It's not yet clear when the work on the plant upgrade will be completed, GM saying it will announce when it will be ready to add the new jobs sometime in the near future.

“America’s fastest-growing luxury brand this year is about to get even more competitive with the addition of an all-new small luxury car,” said Dan Akerson, GM CEO. “This investment demonstrates GM’s commitment to Cadillac and to a strong U.S. manufacturing base.”

The ATS, or the small Cadillac to be manufactured at the plant will spawn a new line of vehicles, complete with a coupe and a convertible. It's likely the cars will use the engines found on the Buick Regal and Regal GS, the 2.4l naturally-aspirated and the 2.0l turbocharged, respectively. The new model is expected to be similar in size to the European BLS, a model which it will replace when it is launched.

"The UAW recognizes the paramount importance of innovation, flexibility and partnership with management to respond to global economic pressures,”
said Joe Ashton, UAW vice president of the GM Department.

“We are proud to play our part in the turnaround at GM.  Our mission is to make the highest quality products for the best value.”
