GM China Advanced Technical Center Breaks Ground

American manufacturer GM announced today it has begun building the Advanced Technical Center in Shanghai, China, a facility which will be in charge of developing advanced vehicle designs and technology for the carmakers global operations.

The facility will comprise 62 test and nine research labs, with four research and design groups (including the China Science Lab, the Advanced Powertrain Engineering and the Advanced Design Center) to be headquartered at the location.

“As an integral element of our global product development strategy, the [centre] will create advanced technologies and lead GM's global research in targeted areas,” Kevin Wale, GM China president was quoted as saying by just-auto.com.

“We expect it to become one of GM’s most important and comprehensive technical and design facilities worldwide.”

The China Science Lab will be in charge of research and development for technologies which will not hit the market sooner than 15 years. It will focus on advanced propulsion systems, manufacturing process, megacity smart traffic, customer driven advanced vehicle development, battery cell material and fabrication research and lightweight materials.

The Advanced Powertrain Engineering will handle development of electric vehicles and other alternative-propulsion vehicles to be created for the Chinese market. The Advanced Powertrain Engineering Lab will also work on this task, but also on fashion and other design trends to go with the vehicles developed by the other departments.

“As a global technology leader and the global industry leader in China, GM is committed to working with the Chinese government, industry partners and the academic community in the development of tomorrow’s vehicles. By joining forces, we can accelerate the arrival of sustainable transportation and remove the motor vehicle from the environmental equation,”
Wale added.
