GM Buys CAMI

Japanese carmaker Suzuki is now officially out of North America, after American manufacturer GM announced today it will acquire 100 percent of the the CAMI Automotive Incorporated (CAMI) business. The terms of the transaction, including the price GM will pay for the operation, were not disclosed.

GM Canada recognizes that the culture and values of the CAMI workforce have played a key role in producing world class vehicles,” Arturo Elias, president of GM Canada said in a release.

"Bringing CAMI completely into the GM family is a strong vote of confidence in the people there and builds on the recent positive news at the plant since the highly successful launch of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain.

Today's announcement marks the end of half of year of inactivity for Suzuki at CAMI. The Japanese carmaker ceased production back in May, due to collapsing sales. It used to manufacture the Suzuki XL7 SUV here, the only North American-made Suzuki.

Back in July, Suzuki expressed their concerns about the future of the joint venture with GM, but said it doesn't plan to pull out. For the first half of the year, ales figures for Suzuki in the US fell by some 60 percent, to 22,408 units.

On the other hand, GM is building here the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. It is expected it will increase production capacity at the plant for the two models, as November sales figures for the two models increased over 17 percent. In all, capacity will be increased by an additional 40,000 vehicles annually.
