GM Announces Third Shift at Flint

Just as GM insiders have been claiming ever since the past weekend, American manufacturer GM confirmed today the expansion plans it has for its Flint Assembly plant, by announcing the addition of a third shift to the facility.

This means the car maker would need an extra 750 workers (initial information pointed to 650) to handle the production of redesigned pick-up trucks the manufacturer plans to produce here.

The increased workforce, which will be selected from the former GM employees, will begin work in the third quarter of the year, with the first wave to get on the payroll within six months.

Most of the people who will be coming back to Flint are currently relocated at GM's facilities in Lansing, Orion, Willow Run and Warren.

"Adding a third shift is a response to customer demand for heavy-duty pickups, which most people use to tow, haul and plow,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America. “Equally importantly, it brings jobs and a needed economic boost to the Flint area."

The current workforce at the Flint Assembly plant comprises 2,100 workers. The decision to hire more comes as a God sent gift for the people affected by 2009's bankruptcy as is being seen by the UAW to be the natural result of a job well done.

“I want to thank the Local 598 members for their hard work in building the best pickups on the road,” said UAW Local 598 Chairman Dana Rouse. “Adding the third shift allows us to call back some former Flint Assembly workers and provide employment for others who have been laid off.”
