General Motors has been very busy with its announcements these days, and their latest one reveals a that a totally new small-displacement engine range is coming our way in the next several years.
While the three- and four-cylider units have Chevrolet written all over them, that does not take away from the fact that they will likely also see applications in Opel and Vauxhall sub-compacts and compacts. The automakers say that the there-cylinder isn’t being targeted at the US market.
“Our customers around the world agree we need to reduce our dependence on petroleum and reduce vehicle carbon emissions,” said Jim Federico, vehicle line executive for GM global small cars and electric vehicles.
These engines will displace between 1 and 1.5 liters and will feature lightweight construction, direct-injection, turbocharging and alternative fuel capacity (Flex-Fuel if you like).
Production will kick off by 2015, and the engine family will have mass-market applications, since a total of 2 million units a year could become part of the production plan by 2020.
