GM and SAIC Sign Strategic Partnership

The events which brought American manufacturer GM closer and closer to its Chinese partner SAIC over the past few years reached a whole new level this week, when the two companies decided to tie their destinies through a strategic partnership agreement.

Through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday in Shanghai, the two carmakers have decided to step up efforts for the development of joint vehicles. The Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) operated by the two will play a major role in this new agreement.

The cooperation will enter a new territory in the near future, as GM agreed to share an architecture and powertrain application in an effort to reduce development cost. In addition, the two will manufacture a new small-displacement gasoline engine family and an advanced transmission in Detroit and at PATAC.

“The signing of the MoU builds on the automakers’ efforts to explore cooperation in Asia’s emerging markets, led by India, and to co-develop two efficient next-generation powertrain families,”
GM said in a statement. “It represents an extension of SAIC and GM’s plans to build a closer strategic alliance.“

SAIC and GM recently concluded their joint display at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, a place where the carmakers presented the EN-V tiny little personal transporter, the YeZ breathing car and the Shell car/bedroom/office/gym.

The MoU signed this week comes as a confirmation for the good times the two companies are going through together. When GM announced its initial public offering, SAIC hinted to the possibility of purchasing some GM shares
