Glass Sphere Solar Cells Might Power Your EV Soon

Yesterday we were showing you how using solar panels instead of asphalt would solve a lot of problems in creating a greener urban area. But if that seems rather a very expensive project, here’s another one that looks more realistic.

It’s clear that our sun is constantly providing us a huge amount of power and all we need to do is find a way to collect and use it properly for something else than photosynthesis and getting a nice tan.

We already have solar panels, but as you know, they are rectangular and depending on where they are mounted, they can’t always face the sun. Having an overcast sky is also a problem for them so here’s a genius idea to solve all the problems...

Use a big glass or liquid sphere to collect more energy from the sun and concentrate it on a smaller heat-photovoltaic cell system. Depending on the sphere’s diameter, the fire point can rise by as much as 20,000 times, but you probably know that from bringing the apocalypse to some poor ants with a large magnifier when you were a kid.

The system pretty much resembles those Earth desk globes but made out of glass and having some generators attached to them. Currently, the project is under development at Rawlemon, a German-Spanish small company based near Barcelona.

They want to further work on their system up to the point that can be built into large windows to save space and would like to put them in production in around four years.

Even if they won’t manage to find a way onto incorporating these instead of classic windows, we think a couple of these crystal balls planted in your backyard would be enough to charge your electric vehicle for free.
